CCA Andratx is pleased to present the new exhibition by the artist Pepa Prieto. As a result of her stay at the CCA Artist-in-Residence Program, the exhibition shows the latest series of works by the Spanish artist, based in New York.
The exhibition How Did I Convince Myself? shows the evolution in her work. Pepa Prieto's works always have a strong autobiographical component, which this time delves into the feeling of belonging to a place and migration.
How did I convince myself to emigrate?
This is where my painting begins: the idea of illusion. The first time I felt I needed to create a fantasy of what the place would be. Like a mirage in the desert – the illusion gave me hope.
My paintings deal directly with this pattern of thinking by suggesting a window into that fantastic realm, in which we create our own fiction to give us strength. In these works meant to suggest the merging of those hopes with some with the sad realities that have existed. That confrontation that arises when the dreams we had for the future are not willed to come true. However, these paintings can also serve as a window unto ourselves. A connection resource to capture the void in which the viewer inserts his own ideas and visions, creating portals through which one can contemplate himself and his relationship to the world in which they live in, or the once they seek.

El CCA Andratx se complace en presentar la nueva exposición de la artista Pepa Prieto. Como resultado de su estancia en el Programa de Residencias para Artistas, la exposición muestra la última serie de trabajos de la artista española, establecida en Nueva York.
La exposición How Did I Convince Myself? pone de manifiesto la evolución en la obra de Prieto. Las obras de Pepa Prieto siempre tienen un fuerte componente autobiográfico, que en esta ocasión ahonda en el sentimiento de pertenencia a un lugar y la migración.
¿Cómo me convencí a mí misma para emigrar?
Aquí es desde donde parte mi obra: la idea de la ilusión. La primera vez sentí que necesitaba crear una fantasía de lo que sería el lugar. Un especia de espejismo en el desierto – una ilusión que me diera.
Mis pinturas tratan directamente con este patrón de pensamiento, sugiriendo una ventana a ese reino fantástico, en el que creamos nuestra propia ficción para darnos fuerza. En estas obras quería sugerir la fusión de esas esperanzas con algunas con las tristes realidades que han podido existir. Esa confrontación que surge cuando en un momento dado los sueños que teníamos para el futuro no han querido hacerse realidad. Sin embargo, estas pinturas también pueden servir como una ventana para nosotros mismos. Un recurso de enlace para capturar el vacío en el que el espectador inserte sus propias ideas y visiones, creando portales a través del que uno puede contemplarse a sí mismo y su relación con el mundo en que viven o el que buscan.
