Sleepless Light Exercises. A project by Bernardí Roig at the Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury Festival, Kent’s International Arts Festival, returns this year from the 15 October to 5 November. Each year, the Festival uses the magnificent Chapter House in Canterbury Cathedral to provide the backdrop for contemporary art projects. This year the Festival, along with the University of the Creative Arts (Canterbury), are delighted to present an installation by the international exhibited artist Bernardí Roig (Palma de Mallorca, 1965). Roig’s previous projects have toured to a number of historic sites including Burgos Cathedral and La Lonja de Palma de Mallorca, making his creations ideal to appear in this emblematic site. The project in curated by Emma Braso, Cultural Programme Curator at the University for the Creative Arts (Canterbury), the organisers of the event.
Roig’s work Sleepless light exercises includes a life-size sculpture leaning against a wall covered in 200 fluorescent tubes. The figure, made from polyester resin, represents a man engaged in an ambiguous action that excludes the spectator. The total whiteness of his body and the powerful light coming from the lamps creates a dramatic contrast with the surrounding Gothic space, including the stained glass windows covering the room’s walls. Roig’s work explores themes like human isolation, loneliness, the limits of knowledge or the body’s deterioration. The artist has created a tense relationship between figure and background, between rational comprehension and spiritual understanding, between artificial light and divine clarity.
The installation will open during the Festival and stay accessible to visitors for two weeks.

Professional background: Bernardí Roig has been active in the international art scene for the past 25 years. His work has been recently shown in solo exhibitions at Sala Alcala 31 (Madrid), MUNTREF Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (Buenos Aires), The Phillips Collection (Washington), and Residenzgalerie Museum (Salzburg). His drawings, sculptures and installations are part of private and public collections in Spain, Italy, Cuba, Slovenia. Venezuela, Belgium and Japan.

Ejercicios de Luz Insomne. Un proyecto de Bernardí Roig para la Catedral de Canterbury

El Festival de Canterbury presenta una instalación del artista Bernardí Roig (Palma de Mallorca, 1965) en la Sala Capitular de la Catedral de Canterbury. Cada año durante el Festival de las artes de la ciudad, la Sala Capitular acoge un proyecto de arte contemporáneo. En la edición de 2016, la instalación de Roig será el principal evento en la sección de artes visuales. Los anteriores proyectos de Roig en espacios religiosos como la Catedral de Burgos y en edificios con un alto valor histórico-artístico como La Lonja de Palma de Mallorca le convierten en un artista idóneo para intervenir con su trabajo en uno de los edificios más emblemáticos de Reino Unido. El proyecto está comisariado por la española Emma Brasó, actualmente responsable de la programación cultural de University for the Creative Arts (Canterbury), institución que organiza el evento.
Para esta ocasión, Roig ha propuesto la pieza Ejercicios de luz insomne / Sleepless light exercises, que incluye una escultura de tamaño natural apoyada contra un muro de madera forrado, en una de sus caras, por doscientas lámparas fluorescentes. La figura, hecha en resina de poliéster, representa a un hombre desarrollando una tarea de difícil identificación que excluye al espectador. La blancura total de su cuerpo y la potente luz que producen las lámparas crean un dramático contraste con el espacio gótico circundante, incluida la multicolor vidriera que recorre la sala. El trabajo de Roig trata temas como la incomunicación, la soledad, los límites del conocimiento o el deterioro del cuerpo. En esta ocasión, el artista propone una (in)tensa relación entre la instalación y el contexto arquitectónico y simbólico de la Catedral; entre la comprensión racional y la percepción espiritual; entre la luz artificial y la claridad divina.
La instalación se inaugurará durante el Festival y permanecerá en la Catedral de Canterbury durante dos semanas.
