Cecilia Bonilla
(Uruguay, 1973)
Vive y trabaja entre Londres / Lives and works in London
/
Bonilla appropriates mass-produced images from sources such as magazines, product catalogues, advertising and the internet, to produce works ranging from small-scale collages, photographs, videos and sculptures to large installations and site-specific interventions.
Through the use of manual intervention and digital manipulation, her practice predominantly explores our relationship with the commercial mass-produced image and female representation in mass-media. In each case she critically reflects upon the purpose of an image’s existence, changing the rules, so that expectations of how they are primarily designed to function become altered thus questioned.
Her collages and videos reflect an interest in the 'homemade’ and ‘low-tech' aesthetics. Using simple filming techniques, she often physically animates still images by using manual camera movements, light manipulation and the addition of new concrete elements, such as human hair, studs and paint
