Spanish Contemporary Art Network

Spanish/Welsh artist. Lives and works in Barcelona, Spain. Rafael received a BA in Fine art from Goldsmiths University, London UK.

His works have been shown in Mexico, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, U.S, London, Berlin & Madrid.
Through the use of research and ethnography, he is excavating and unearthing lost stories, newspapers, images & local rumours. These then get reworked and result in installations which use performance, photography, found imagery, video, objects & painting, that produce a further blurring of their contents source as well as bring to surface the problems inherent in reading a narrative.

As a sort archeologist from the ‘West’ he has been working and living in countries such as Mexico, US, Cuba & Brazil, where he operated within a certain western nostalgia for a rawer past, creating works and extracting source material to then reconstruct in Europe, in this process also encountering a certain post-colonial anxiety which hovers through his practice.
In his ‘diggings’ we encounter various sites & research centres, an example is the history of sugar cane plantations in Brazil, which intertwines economy, land, labor, colonies, and whose ghost – spectre is still ever present.

Preoccupations in unearthing peculiar local stories is part of the foundation for this type of archeology, where the findings of his ‘diggings’ can bring some further questioning into the subject of how we relate to hierarchy within the information receive in stories, history and rumours.

Recent exhibitions include Solo in Nogueras Blanchard (Barcelona), Despina (Río de Janeiro),  Lekka & Perikleous/Stoa Zerbini (Atenas), Galería Yusto Giner (Marbella), Paratext, Hangar (Barcelona). He is part of Proyecto Gazua (Río de Janeiro) y is founder of project Romita 26 (Ciudad de México). Currently resident  in Hangar Barcelona, he has also completed residencies in Red Studios (São Paulo) and Alto (Brasil). Pérez Evans  was recently nominated for the Premio Miquel Casablancas in Barcelona.

Artista español/galés. Rafael es licenciado en Bellas Artes por la universidad de Goldsmiths en Londres.

Sus obras han sido expuestas en México, Río de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, U.S.A, Londres, Berlín y Barcelona. A través del uso de la etnografía y la investigación, está excavando y desenterrando historias perdidas, gestos, noticias, imágenes y rumores locales. Estos luego son re-elaborados en instalaciones que utilizan performance, imágenes y objetos que van re-capitulando narrativas de micro-resistencias dentro de una nueva historiografía ficticia.

Como “arqueólogo Occidental”, ha estado trabajando y viviendo en países como México, USA, Cuba y Brasil, donde ha excavado desde una nostalgia por un pasado más crudo, extrayendo material para luego reconstruir en Europa, en este proceso encontrando una ansiedad postcolonial que ronda a través de su práctica.

A veces su tipo de arqueología tiene como inquietud el desenterrar historias locales peculiares, donde los resultados de las excavaciones, pueden traer algún cuestionamiento más sobre como nos relacionamos con la jerarquía de la información, aquellas que recibimos en relatos, la historia y rumores.

Sus exposiciones más recientes incluyen Individual en Nogueras Blanchard (Barcelona), Despina (Río de Janeiro),  Lekka & Perikleous/Stoa Zerbini (Atenas), Galería Yusto Giner (Marbella), Paratext, Hangar (Barcelona). Formar parte del Proyecto Gazua (Río de Janeiro) y es fundador del proyecto Romita 26 (Ciudad de México). Es residente en Hangar Barcelona, también ha realizado residencias en Red Studios (São Paulo) y Alto (Brasil). Pérez Evans fue recientemente nominado al Premio Miquel Casablancas en la modalidad de proyecto.
