Leonor Serrano Rivas

Nacida en Málaga en 1986, Leonor Serrano Rivas estudio Arquitectura en la universidad Europea de Madrid (2004-2012) y Bellas Artes en la misma universidad (2004-2011). Recibió un Masters en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Goldsmith University en el 2015. Su trabajo explora diferentes formatos y medios siempre investigando situaciones intermedias ente arte, arquitectura, teatro y movimiento. Recientemente ha sido la receptora de la Beca internacional de artes visuales de la Fundación Botín, Artista joven revelación en ARCO 2016, premio otorgado por Solan de Cabras y seleccionada para The New contemporaries en el Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo de Londres (ICA) en 2016.

Es una miembro activa del proyecto educacional  'Around the Corner' desde 2015.

Born in Málaga, Spain in 1986, Leonor Serrano Rivas studied Architecture at the Universidad Europea de Madrid (2004-2012) and Fine Arts at the same university (2004-2011). She is an active member of the educational project Around the Corner since 2015.

 

She has currently prepared a performance for Chisenhale Studio/ GB supported by Goldsmiths University, and she is currently a commission for CAAC, Seville/ES

 

STATEMENT / ARTIST STATEMENT

 

Trabajo en una variedad de medios, empleando escultura, performance, video, dibujo, sonido, y texto en mi práctica artística. A menudo creando instalaciones temporales y acciones, mi trabajo muestra una preocupación continua con nuestra a veces improvisada ocupación temporal del espacio en el que nos encontramos. Estoy interesada en como la exposición puede atrapar lo diario a través de la creación de una ilusión situada al borde de lo real. Propongo un juego, que rigurosamente se adhiere a sus propias reglas e implica un acto de imitación.

 

En mi trabajo más reciente, he tomado un manual de escenografía renacentista como mi punto de partida. Usando diagramas como instrucciones para dirigir al lector en cómo construir una gama de accesorios reales  y supernaturales, que he interpretado libremente para  crear una serie de esculturas, video e  instalación. La pieza es un continuado proceso de improvisación e imitación en que  los diferentes elementos son reconstruidos para diversas exposiciones, de esta forma enfatizando la naturaleza provisional y abierta de los procesos de interpretación de los que la pieza emana. También muestra una acentuada preocupación por  sus orígenes teatrales, evocando motivos relacionados con 'El telón de fondo', 'El coro', y la partitura en la forma propia del libro.

I work in a range of media, employing sculpture, performance, film, drawing, audio and text within my practice. Often creating temporary installations and performances, my work exhibits an abiding concern with our often improvised and temporal engagement with the spaces in which we find ourselves. I am interested in how the exhibition can grasp the everyday through the creation of an illusion that can stand on the edge of reality. I propose a play, which rigorously adheres to its own script and involves an action of mimicry.

 

For my most recent body of work, I have taken a Renaissance scenography manual as my point of departure. Using diagrams instructing the reader on how to make a range of natural and supernatural props, I have freely interpreted these to create a series of sculptures, a video and resulting installation. The work is an ongoing process of improvisation and imitation with the various elements being re-made for different exhibitions, thereby emphasising the provisional and open-ended nature of the interpretive processes from which they arise. It also shows a heightened concern with its theatrical roots, evoking the motifs of 'the backdrop', 'the chorus' and also 'the script' in the form of the book itself.
