Greta Alfaro

(Pamplona, 1977)

Greta Alfaro es licenciada en Bellas Artes por la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia y Master in Fine Art por el Royal College of Art de Londres.

 

El trabajo de Greta Alfaro genera situaciones de apariencia fantástica que, sin embargo han sido creadas a partir de materiales cotidianos en espacios ordinarios. Su objetivo es generar reflexiones a partir de la yuxtaposición de elementos contrarios y de la aproximación de lo contemporáneo a temas ligados a lo mítico, lo histórico, lo tradicional y lo paranormal. Desarrolla su trabajo a través de diferentes medios, principalmente vídeo, fotografía, instalación y collage, a menudo desde una orientación site-specific.

 

Su trabajo ha recibido premios y becas como Generaciones de Caja Madrid, beca CAM de artes plásticas, Genesis Foundation Award en Londres, James Prize en la Moving Image Contemporary Video Art Fair en Nueva York, etc. Actualmente es residente en la Real Academia de España en Roma.

 

Entre sus últimas exposiciones individuales cabe destacar 'Still Life with Books' en Artium, Vitoria, 'European Dark Room', en la galería Rosa Santos de Valencia, 'A Very Crafty and Tricky Contrivance' en el edificio Fish and Coal en Londres, 'Invención' en el Museo Ex Teresa Arte Actual de Ciudad de México, o 'Elogio de la Bestia' en el Centro Huarte de Arte Contemporáneo de Pamplona.

 

Ha expuesto en numerosas exposiciones colectivas, recientemente en Vanitas en el Bass Museum of Contemporary Art en Miami, New Order: British Art Today en la Saatchi Gallery, Bloomberg New Contemporaries, en el Institute of Contemporary Art, Londres, Whitechapel Open en la Whitechapel Gallery, en Londres,  Inanimate Beings, en La Casa Encendida en Madrid.

 

Su trabajo en vídeo se ha mostrado festivales como el International Film Festival Rotterdam, el festival Punto de Vista en Pamplona, o los Rencontres Internationales en el Centro Pompidou en París.

Greta Alfaro studied Fine Art at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain, and a Masters in Photography at the Royal College of Art in London.

 

She creates situations that seem fantastic but that are made out of everyday materials and in overlooked locations. She is interested in approaching the mythic, the historic, the traditional and the paranormal to the contemporary, and in creating unexpected juxtapositions that allow for further reflection on current times and western identity.She works in different media, mainly video, installation, collage and photography, with a focus in site-specific productions.

 

Her work has received awards and grants such as Generaciones from Caja Madrid, CAM grant for visual arts, Genesis Foundation Award in London, James prize at the Moving Image Contemporary Art Fair in New York, etc. Currently is artist resident at the Royal Spanish Academy in Rome.

 

Among her latest solo exhibitions is worth mentioning 'Still Life with Books' at Artium, Vitoria, 'European Dark Room' at Rosa Santos Gallery in Valencia, 'A Very Crafty and Tricky Contrivance' at the Fish and Coal building in London, 'Invención' at the Ex Teresa Arte Actual Museum in Mexico City, or 'Elogio de la Bestia' at the Huarte Contemporary Art Centre in Pamplona.

 

She has shown her work in numerous collective shows, most recently in 'Vanitas' at the Bass Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, 'New Order: British Art Today' at the Saatchi Gallery, London, 'Bloomberg New contemporaries', at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, 'Whitechapel Open' at the Whitechapel Gallery in London and Inanimate Beings, at the Casa Encendida in Madrid.

 

Her video work has also been screened at the Rencontres Internationales at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
